There are two different ways to shop in Naples: you can either indulge in smart window-shopping in expensive boutiques, following the weekend shopping routes taken by Neapolitans, or else wander at leisure through the old alleyways of the historic city centre in search of more unusual items, perhaps in the craft shops that are typical of the city.
Where to shop in Naples
Certain districts of Naples are more specialised than others. For designer clothes, you'll find the luxury boutiques in and around Piazza dei Martiri. The area around via dei Mille is still fairy smart. Alternatively, there's via Chiaia, which offers more informal styles. The Vomero district has numerous clothes, shoe and accessory shops. Via Toledo has attractive shops in the pedestrian area near the Palazzo Reale, but shops in the upper part of via Toledo, such as Corso Umberto, tend to be rather scruffy. If you're looking for furniture or fittings, there are numerous shops around piazza Municipio and via dei Mille. For antiques, head for via D. Morelli, or towards via Costantinopoli in the historic centre.
Opening hours in Naples
Usually, shops open 10.30am-1.30pm/2pm and 4.30 pm-7.30pm/8pm, and are closed on Sundays and Monday mornings in winter, and Saturday afternoons in summer. In the Spaccanapoli area and around via Tribunali, shops are closed on Saturday afternoons all year. Food shops open earlier in the morning and close on Sundays and Thursday afternoons. Many shops and businesses close for an annual holiday for two weeks around 15 august, and the city may seem a little empty. During the lead-up to Christmas and in May, the shops in the historic centre and around Spaccanapoli are open on Saturdays and Sundays, and some even stay open late.
Bargaining in Naples
Prices are generally fixed, and shops will often display a sign saying so. It wouldn't be appropriate to try and haggle in clothes or food shops, but, if you feel like it, try your luck with craftsmen, antique and seconhand dealers, and at the flea markets.
Sales
Sales are held in most shops. The summer sales are in July and mid-September, and the winter ones from mid-January to mid-March. If prices seem suspiciously low, it may be that the shop-keeper is trying to get rid of old models or poor-quality goods.
